For what to do in San Jose for a day, pair Japantown’s Japanese American Museum with one downtown museum, then add a park stop if the hours and your pace allow. From Alura Inn, the Japanese American Museum of San Jose is about a 6-minute drive, making it a practical first stop from a north San Jose base.

  • Japantown: The Japanese American Museum of San Jose is open Thursday through Sunday, 12 p.m.–4 p.m.
  • Downtown museums: The San José Museum of Art and the Institute of Contemporary Art San José have different hours and admission policies.
  • Park option: Kelley Park includes the Japanese Friendship Garden and History Park.

Before you start: transport and opening hours

Check museum opening days first, then choose how to connect the stops. The Japanese American Museum lists VTA light rail’s Japantown/Ayer station and bus routes 61 and 62 as transit options; parking at the museum is limited, with metered and non-metered parking elsewhere in Japantown.

For a downtown museum, the Institute of Contemporary Art San José identifies VTA Light Rail line 902 and Convention Center Station as a transit option.

From the station, the walk is eight minutes southwest along South Market Street to South First Street. The Japanese American Museum says its facility is wheelchair accessible and its lot has two ADA-compliant parking spaces.

Opening hours and admission can affect which stops fit into a one-day San Jose itinerary. Check the official site before you go for current details from each museum or park operator.

Morning in Japantown

Morning in Japantown

Use the morning to get to Japantown, then plan the Japanese American Museum visit for its noon opening. The museum is at 535 North Fifth Street, San Jose, and admission is $12 for adults and $8 for seniors, students, and educators.

Children under 5 and museum members enter free; active-duty military personnel and their families, and Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii members with valid ID, also receive free admission.

The exhibits cover more than a century of Japanese American history, from early immigration and agricultural leadership to World War II incarceration and contributions to West Coast communities. For more on the visit, see the Japanese American Museum of San Jose visiting guide.

The museum is closed on Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day. If your day falls outside its Thursday-through-Sunday schedule, begin with a downtown museum instead.

Choose a downtown museum

Choose a downtown museum

Choose a downtown museum by matching its opening days and admission to your schedule. The San José Museum of Art and the Institute of Contemporary Art San José offer distinct options, with the latter providing free admission.

San José Museum of Art

The San José Museum of Art is at 110 South Market Street. Its listed hours are Tuesday–Thursday, 11 a.m.–6 p.m.; Friday, 11 a.m.–9 p.m.; and Saturday–Sunday, 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Admission is $20 for adults and $15 for visitors 65 and older; visitors 17 and under, college students, and teachers receive free individual admission.

Public exhibition tours are offered Thursday at 5 p.m. and Friday–Sunday at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.; tours meet in the museum lobby. The museum also holds a monthly First Fridays event with free admission after 6 p.m.

Institute of Contemporary Art San José

The Institute of Contemporary Art San José is at 560 South First Street and is open Thursday–Sunday, 12–5 p.m. Admission is free. Its transit option is VTA Light Rail line 902 to Convention Center Station, followed by an eight-minute walk southwest along South Market Street to South First Street.

After a museum, add Kelley Park if its hours suit your day. The 172-acre park is at 1300 Senter Road, San Jose, and the City lists its hours as 8 a.m. until half an hour after sunset.

The City lists the Japanese Friendship Garden, History Park, and Happy Hollow Park & Zoo among Kelley Park destinations; animals are not allowed in those three destinations. History Park is a 14-acre gated site with more than 30 historic and replica structures. Admission is free unless otherwise noted.

History Park’s listed general hours are Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.; Saturday, 2 a.m.–6:30 p.m.; and Sunday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. The Saturday opening time is unusual, so confirm it with History San José. Historic-building hours are listed separately: Sunday, 12 p.m.–3:45 p.m., with buildings closed Monday–Saturday.

Adjust the route for weather or closures

Adjust the route for weather or closures

Keep the day flexible by switching the order of indoor museums and outdoor time when hours or conditions make the original plan impractical. If the Japanese American Museum is closed, start with a downtown museum that is open; if you visit it at noon, leave the earlier part of the day for another stop.

Kelley Park’s destinations have their own access details, so check the relevant operator’s information before planning around History Park buildings or another specific attraction. The park itself is listed as open from 8 a.m. until half an hour after sunset.
